You are so right; so many of our students across the board are not connected to nature. I teach middle class - upper middle class kids that certainly have access to nature in some beautiful neighborhoods, but most of them spend time outdoors prima...

Now I am curious about this book, Last Child in the Woods. I grew up in the 60's and lived at the beach in Ocean City, NJ. We took off for the day and spent the entire day collecting starfish and shells. Last year was the 1st year I saw a starfish...

A few years ago I attended a conference for outdoor educators and they suggested we read a book entitled "Last Child in the Woods." As soon as I got home I purchased the book and began to read. Wow, did it bring back memories of my early childhood...

I have found that middle school students learn a lot more that we think they do. I teach 5th and 6th grade students in an outdoor setting every day. I have the same students that I taught in the 5th grade again in the 6th grade and I am always tot...

The Next Generation of Park Stewards

I just spent a few weeks getting my son ready to start college. We got some clothes, some sheets for the dorm room, and posters (I had forgotten the importance of posters in the college dorm room). There is never enough time to prepare. He wants to become a history teacher ( a logical choice when your father is an historian, and your mother an archaeologist and educator).

What a summer!

I am in my final week as a TRT in Badlands National Park. What an absolutely awesome experience this has been. So many great places to explore here and wonderful people to meet. The opportunity to share our National Treasures with people from all over the world is a memory that I will always treasure. The geology here is amazing, the fossil record is immense, and the Native American heritage is enlightening. I spent a couple of days working with the Oglala Sioux on a project at the South Unit of… Continue

New to the blog

I took the BTW course at the end of June. Since then I have been busy planning to use the informationin te classroom. I have also been going to around more of Prince William Park in an effort to scout out areas we might be able to access as a class. I would like to use the area more for my general Biology classes. I have also developed an interest in Geocaching and am trying to incorporate that as well. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks Pattye

Wow, I'll look forward to the day when I do not have to stand at the window with my Mac laptop pointing in the direction of a poached WiFi signal to access our new site!
